Flora Dora Cottage, Filey, North Yorkshire

Flora Dora Cottage is a freshly-refurbished four-bedroomed 18th century fisherman's cottage located on the oldest street in Filey, North Yorkshire.

Just a stone's throw from the iconic seven-mile Filey Bay, it is the perfect base for a holiday or break right on the stunning Yorkshire coastline.

Well over 200 years old, Flora Dora Cottage was originally built as a simple one up, one down cottage for fishermen who used to launch their flat-bottomed ‘Coble’ boats directly from the beach into the North Sea on Filey Bay, just a few minutes from us. Queen Street is the oldest road in Filey's Old Town, with a variety of higgledy-piggledy housing built over several centuries, which gives it so much charm and character.

After generations of our Smith family had enjoyed holidays in the Filey area for nearly 100 years, we fell in love with Flora Dora Cottage, even though it was in such poor condition that much of it had to be demolished, before being sympathetically rebuilt and remodelled over a period of two years. A new annexe replaced an old garage and outside toilet to provide a fourth en-suite bedroom and boot room, bringing together the generous ‘tardis-like’ layout so many of our happy guests comment on.

Today, Flora Dora Cottage provides luxurious and modern accommodation for 8 to 9 people, including a super kingsize master bedroom, two further kingsize bedrooms, plus a twin bedroom with additional trundle bed. With a large and comfortable lounge, well-appointed kitchen, plus two beautiful bathrooms, there is plenty of space for your family to spread out, relax and really enjoy your time with us!

Pure seaside luxury...

Flora Dora Cottage is simply inspired by the seaside, with a palette of blues, turquoises and whites to complement its' bright and airy rooms.

Decorated with abstract paintings by acclaimed artist Patricia Larsen, imagined by the changing moods of the sky and the sea, as well as vintage seaside railway posters and artworks by local graphic designer Ian Mitchell. We continue to make updates and improvements at the property, collecting  interior design inspiration and other ideas from our travels.

The property has been upgraded for 2024, with new furniture, soft furnishings, plus other luxuries including Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobes and Dolce Gusto coffee, all intended to make your stay with us even more comfortable and memorable.

Less than five minutes' walk to the beach...

The centre of Filey, with its' wide variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and other attractions is just a few minutes walk from Flora Dora...

Stand at the end of Queen Street and admire the view across Filey Bay, where you can see for miles and miles...

Pop your head out of Flora Dora Cottage's front door, eyes right, and you will immediately see Filey Bay, where the world is your lobster!

It’s less than five minutes’ walk down to the Coble Landing, down the steps at the end of Queen St, a right turn as you walk out of the house.

A traditional seaside amusement arcade, ice cream, cafes, seafood, fish and chips and the best bacon butties all await you on the Coble Landing. Along the seafront you will find a small fairground, bouncy castle, crazy golf, and much more.

Filey is famous for its seven-mile-long beach, and you can walk to either end of the bay – north to Filey Brigg, which is the rocky outland extending right out into the sea. At low tide you can walk right along to the end of the Brigg (please check local tide tables carefully before you go!)

Heading south on the beach, you can walk to Reighton Sands in an hour or so, with a cafe at Humanby Gap on the way serving refreshments and ice creams.  During your stroll, you will pass Billy Butlin's former home The White House, close to where Butlin's was located before closing in the early 1980s.

If you enjoy cliffside walks, head north over to Filey Country Park which is just a few minutes’ walk from the cottage, where you can walk to Cayton Bay and beyond along the clifftop path, ending up in Scarborough. The cliffs south of Region Gap include the spectacular Flamborough Head outland with lighthouse and hidden cove, once famous for smugglers.  Close by, the RSPB nature reserve Bempton Cliffs offers an opportunity to watch many species of seabirds. South of here is Bridlington, where the charming Old Town is well worth a visit.

North Yorkshire right on your doorstep..

With so much to do in the area, both close or further afield, you will be spoilt for choice. Filey is a small but perfectly formed former fishing town, steeped in 1950s charm. To the north is Scarborough, a larger seaside resort popular since Victorian times.  Slightly further north takes you to stunning and historic  Whitby, with its' ruined abbey and famous 199 steps. The North Yorkshire coastline also offers many sleepy and quaint villages to explore, while a short trip inland takes you to the North Yorkshire National Park & Dalby Forest, or to Yorkshire 'foodie capital' Malton.  Catch a steam train from pretty market town Pickering on the 20 mile-long North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Grosmont (TV's 'Heartbeat' country), or all the way up to the coast at Whitby.  Roman York is also only an hour away with everything from world-famous Minster to Jorvik and the National Railway Museum. If you're in need of some retail therapy, York's Designer Outlet Park is also close by. You'll never be bored while in these parts!
